What is Clear Lens Exchange?

Clear Lens Exchange, also known as “CLE,” is an alternative to LASIK eye surgery and PRK surgery. Clear Lens Exchange is most commonly recommended for patients who have extreme prescriptions, early cataracts, or thin corneas.

How does Clear Lens Exchange work?

The Clear Lens Exchange procedure is similar to the procedures used for lens replacement or cataract treatment. During the procedure, your surgeon will use laser technology to replace your natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens. The new intraocular lens will not change the appearance of your eye, and you will not be able to feel it. Once this intraocular lens is in place, your vision will improve, and you will no longer be at risk for developing cataracts.

Clear Lens Exchange Options

Different intraocular lenses are available to patients considering the Clear Lens Exchange procedure. The lenses chosen will affect your vision after the procedure. Our team will work closely with you to find the lens that will fit best with your lifestyle. Lenses used in Clear Lens Exchange procedures may eliminate your need for corrective lenses or contacts.

When is Clear Lens Exchange appropriate?

Clear Lens Exchange may be appropriate for you if you have thin corneas, farsightedness or an extreme eyeglass prescription. Patients with astigmatism can usually qualify for CLE. We most commonly recommend CLE for patients who fall into one of the following categories:

  • Patients who have early onset cataracts.
  • Patients under the age of 40 with extreme correction needs.
  • Patients under the age of 40 with thin corneas.
  • Patients over the age of 40 who want to stop using eyeglasses or contacts.

Clear Lens Exchange is not for everyone. The team of experts at Kleiman Evangelista Eye Centers will be happy to assess your needs and help you find the best treatment option.
