Patients often wonder if LASIK is safe. We are here to help!

LASIK eye surgery is safe and extremely common.

Entering any procedure can be scary because you don’t know what you will experience. But LASIK is a highly successful and safe procedure. Over 600,000 surgeries are done in the US each year. To make sure your procedure is safe, you should:

  • Schedule a consultation: LASIK isn’t ideal for every patient. Your eye doctor needs to check out the health and shape of your eyes before considering surgery. The right candidates are less likely to experience any negative side effects and more likely to have positive vision changes.
  • Follow all instructions: Your doctor will give you instructions, like not wearing contact lenses for two weeks before the surgery. Always follow all instructions carefully.
  • Relax and de-stress: Stress can cause all kinds of physical symptoms. Try to relax and focus on the positives leading up to your surgery. Some patients find meditation, breathing exercises and really getting to know the surgeon help with this process. Trust your surgeon and relax during the 5 minutes spent to reshape each cornea.

What Are the Risks?

Every medical procedure comes with some degree of risk, and LASIK is no exception. Among the small number of LASIK patients who do experience side effects, the most common issue is dry eyes. Some patients also experience nighttime glare, but this tends to be mild and typically subsides with time.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Certain health conditions can affect the success of LASIK surgery, so it’s important to share your complete medical history with your eye surgeon during your consultation. This information will help us determine whether you’re a good candidate for LASIK, and help you set realistic expectations for what to expect pre- and post-surgery.

Be sure to let your surgeon know if any of the following are true for you, as they can increase the chances of complications:

  • You’ve experienced a change in your glasses or contact lens prescription during the past year.
  • You have a history of eye disease or eye injury.
  • You have thin corneas.
  • You’re taking medications that inhibit healing, such as corticosteroids.
  • You have a chronic disease like diabetes that may impact your eyesight.
