Symptoms of Astigmatism
The symptoms of astigmatism are sometimes difficult to distinguish from other types of vision problems. In addition, astigmatism often accompanies other types of refractive errors, such as near and farsightedness. These combinations often make treating astigmatism more difficult.
What is Astigmatism?
Before understanding the symptoms of astigmatism, you must know about astigmatism. Many people have been told they suffer from astigmatism without understanding the condition. There are two types of astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism is an imperfection in the curve of the cornea, the covering of the eye. The cornea should be smooth and evenly curved so that light is refracted in the eye properly. An irregularly shaped eye lens causes lenticular astigmatism. In both types of astigmatism, light is improperly focused on the retina, causing a doubling or ghosting effect.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
Common symptoms of astigmatism include blurry vision, eye strain and headaches. Those with astigmatism may squint to see clearly or may suffer from eye discomfort. Many people are born with astigmatism, while others may develop the condition due to disease or injury. Children with astigmatism often do not recognize there is a problem with their vision, especially if they are born with the condition. Treatment for Astigmatism
Although symptoms of astigmatism do not mean you definitely have the condition, an eye exam will confirm whether your symptoms are related to astigmatism, far or nearsightedness or a combination of both.
