Am I a LASIK Candidate?

Many factors go into whether or not you are a LASIK candidate. The only way to truly determine if you are a LASIK candidate is to have a full diagnostic evaluation by a qualified ophthalmologist. During this consultation, your doctor should spend time with you, ensuring your questions are answered and you’re comfortable with the procedure.
Each of our Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center LASIK consultations includes an evaluative exam where comprehensive testing is performed to determine your candidacy. Our eye doctors are more than happy to answer your questions to ensure you are fully informed about your LASIK procedure.
That being said, here some general guidelines for who is a strong LASIK candidate.
1. You need to have stable vision.
Stable vision means your glasses or contact prescription has not dramatically changed for at least a year; two is better. Younger patients (under the age of 25) or those on certain medications may have fluctuating prescriptions.
2. You should be 18 years of age or older.
Eyes mature and develop at differing rates. The best LASIK candidates are at least 18 years of age.
3. You should not be pregnant or nursing.
Pregnant and nursing women often have unstable vision due to hormonal changes. If you are considering pregnancy, talk openly with your surgeon about the possible timing and its ramifications.
4. You have sufficient corneal thickness.
Those with thin corneas (the transparent front of the eye) may not qualify for LASIK. If the cornea is too thin, the surgeon may not be able to safely create the flap. A diagnostic test performed during your evaluation will help your surgeon determine this. (If you are not a candidate for lasik due to poor corneal thickness, the Visian ICL may be an ideal solution for you.)
5. You should have realistic expectations.
LASIK Surgery won’t give you X-Ray vision. Talk to your surgeon during your LASIK consultation about your expectations and concerns. A Kleiman|Evangelista Eye Center medical professional will outline all the possible outcomes, including Visual acuity, healing time and any possible complications.
6. You are a great post-procedure patient.
Your surgeon will provide you definite post-operative procedures to follow – post-op visits, temporary restrictions on behavior, like swimming, and taking proper care for your eyes.
